Favorite Christmas Memory: Our Engagement Story

Frannie over at "Of Mess and Glory” recently asked a question to her readers. The question was,” What is your favorite Christmas memory?”

I have quite a few Christmas memories that are dear to my heart. From sneaking into the living room early Christmas morning, with my sister, to peek into our stockings, or sitting and watching “The Nativity” on Christmas Eve, with my whole family, while gorging on sweet treats.

But there is one memory that happened Christmas morning, in 2012. A memory I greatly cherish. The Christmas, Justin asked me to become his bride.

The scene is the Sunday before Christmas, 2012. Our church was holding its annual Christmas party, and “White Elephant” gift exchange. Someone there received an herb garden planter, which I highly coveted. My turn to choose a gift came, and while I could have “stole” the herb planter, I decided against, and chose an unopened gift. Justin’s turn came, and to my surprise he “stole” the herb planter.

I could not understand why he wanted the planter, but never asked why, and I really did not give it any thought.

The next day was Christmas Eve. We had lunch with his parents and sister’s family, followed by the opening of gifts. We then went caroling to the widows of our church, and returned back to my parents’ house long enough to change clothes for a Christmas Eve service. Following the service we had dinner with some of Justin’s extended family, and then returned back to my house for an evening filled with sweets and a watching of “The Nativity”.

Back up to the opening of gifts at Justin’s parents. I opened gifts from his family, watched the children open theirs, and then Justin handed me a gift from him. I opened it to find the herb planter that I had so wanted at the church Christmas party. I was surprised, and then realized his reasoning for stealing the planter.

About two minutes later, there was a knock on the door, and some more family had dropped by. We visited for just a little bit, but Justin and I had to leave so we would be able to go caroling.

I grabbed my gifts, herb planter included, and we headed out the door. We left his truck at the church, as we planned on riding altogether in our church van.

We caroled, returned to the church, jumped in Justin’s truck, and headed for my parents’ house. I took my gifts inside, herb planter included, placed everything on the desk in my room, and changed clothes so we could head out once more the evening service.

We spent a blessed time in the house of our LORD, singing carols and listening to the Christmas story. Once again we left the church, only to head to his extended family dinner, and then back to my parent’s house for some much welcomed relaxation.

Justin left close to midnight that night, and asked what time he could be back over in the morning for my family celebration. I told him whenever that morning would be fine. He asked if 5 would be too early. I laughed, thinking he sure was anxious to get back over here. I told him he could come that early, but I doubt anyone would be up yet. He said he would be over around 8:30 or so.

I went to bed, and awoke around 7 Christmas morning. I showered and dressed, preparing for that special holiday. I finished getting ready around 7:45, and thought I should do a little straightening up in my room. I came to my desk, and found the pile of gifts, topped with the herb planter. I sat down, and decided to look over that sweet gift, from my very special someone.

I slid back the paper sleeve to look inside and examine the seeds. But the seeds are not what caught my eye.

My heart raced as I laid my eyes on a little black box.

Slowly I opened the box, and found a ring.

At first, I could not believe my eyes. Was this really a ring in the herb planter? Am I really alive and seeing this?

Quickly I jumped on my sisters bed (she was still sleeping), and said “Grace! Look what was in the herb box!”

She sleepily looked at it and I asked “Is this really a ring?”

She then said “So that is why Justin told me to look after that herb box before he left last night…”

I knew it was real then, and I commenced to screaming.

I could not help it! My mind was racing, and I just had to squeal!

Over and over!

Just ask anyone in my family.

I almost deafened them.

My dad who was sleeping still came into the living room asking what in the world was going on. I showed him the ring, and you know what he said? “You need to put that back. I don’t think you were supposed to find that yet”. (He knew Justin was going to propose soon. Justin had asked for my hand the same evening of the church Christmas party)

At that moment, Justin could not get there fast enough for me.

Eight thirty arrived, and so did my prince.

I walked out the door, hands behind my back, and a huge grin on my face, to greet my love.
I walked over to him, and asked him how he was doing. He said he was good, and asked how I was doing. I said “really good.” He then asked, “Did you find something?”

I showed him the ring box, and he smiled really big. I gave him the box, and what happened after is kind of a blur. I think we hugged then. What I do remember him asking me not to “marry him” but if I would become his bride.

We came inside, and hugs were all around from family. We then sat on the couch, and for the first time ever, we held hands.

He then told me of how he had put the ring in the herb planter, and had planned on asking me at his family gathering. He was going to have me open up the paper sleeve on the box, but as fate would have it, family dropped by and the timing was not right. He then hoped I would not open up the planter, but wait and then ask me to grab it on Christmas morning after all the gifts were opened then propose.

If you had asked me when I was younger how my future husband would propose, I probably would have said on the beach, or all alone in some romantic sort of place. I never would have guessed it would have ended up as it did.

But I sure am glad it turned out how it did.

No. It was not hugely “romantic” by most people’s standards. Justin didn’t even get down on one knee. (I did not even realize that fact until he told me he wish he had, but was just so excited and surprised at the how the event unfolded)

But it was perfect. (I said YES and we have now been married for one year and eight months)

GOD showed Himself in that event of our lives. As plain as day, HE showed us that no matter how much we can plan out our lives, HE is still in control, and will work everything out for HIS good and glory.

Perfect Timing...

In December of 2011, I wrote a post on how the LORD so graciously taught me the lesson of contentment. That Christmas was the first one I had spent in a very long time feeling completely and totally joyful in being a single, stay at home daughter. I had finally relented my entire life to the LORD, feeling joyful in the fact that if HE did not have marriage in my future, I was content with that.

During the entire year of 2011, there was a man in my life. A man whom I had become friends with, and truly enjoyed being with. But with that friendship my heart began to long for more. I wasn't very joyful in being "just friends". I was becoming attached to this man. And it was becoming increasingly difficult to be joyful in not having a deeper relationship with him.

In November of that year, I began to become confused about this man. Why was GOD allowing HIM to continue to be my friend and nothing more? I fasted for several days that month, begging GOD to show me if this was the man HE had for me.

Through all of this time, I had to come to a pivotal point in my life. GOD showed me, I had to be completely and totally satisfied in him. To want nothing more in my life, but HIS hand and HIS love. To not want what HE has not brought in my life. But to be wholly satisfied in what I do have.

Christmas came and went, and never before in my life had I felt more joyful in being a single woman, living in the love of my LORD and Savior. I truly wanted nothing more that to be exactly where GOD had placed me. I was happy.

January came, along with great hopes for the coming year. I knew GOD was going to work mightily in the coming year, and I could not wait to see what path HE would lead me down.

Then came that familiar feeling when I saw this man. The feeling of longing, and even confusion. I was joyful in being single, but I still wanted to be with this man. And truth be told  I was not sure of his feelings toward me.

I began to have the feeling that maybe I should approach this man on what his intentions are toward me. But every fiber of my being screamed against it. I did not feel that it would be right for me as the woman in a relationship to approach a man about his intentions. That would be way too forward.

But the still, small voice kept coming to me, saying "talk to him".

Not only was this voice with me in my devotionals and prayers, it began to appear in conversations with those in my life. Friends, family, and spiritual leaders all said the same thing, I needed to know where we stood. And I had not told a single person this thought.

Around the first of February 2012, I knew I had to take that leap of faith, and see where GOD was going to land me. My dad (completely unknowing that I really wanted to talk to Justin that day) asked Justin to dinner after church one Sunday. We went out, ate, then walked next door to a store to browse around. After me and Justin were alone, I told Justin I felt the LORD had been leading me to ask him where we stand in our relationship, and if there was a chance we would be in a courtship.

He told me that until now, the time was not right. To shorten the story, a few weeks later, Justin followed me home after church on a Wednesday night, walked over to my dad, and asked permission to court his daughter. And so our story began.

Through the past ten months, Justin has become my friend, and one true love. And on Christmas Day, he asked me to become his bride.

GOD is so good! I could never have imagined a better story for my life. Through all the waiting, and longing, GOD's hand was right there, orchestrating our lives, bringing everything together perfectly in HIS timing. And for that, I am sooo... thankful. :)

Of Farm Animals and Ferris Wheels...

Good day friends and family! I pray you are all having a wonderful day in our LORD! It's a cold one here in my part of NC. The temps have only reached about 52 and the wind has been blowing out of the north at about 15 mph. And what a wind chill it has created! Brrr... is about all I can say about this weather. :)

How have you all been? Things have been moving steadily along here for me. My K-3 teaching job has kept me fairly busy. But I am so enjoying it this year. The kids are so well behaved, and willing to obey. That always makes the teaching experience enjoyable.

The homestead life is ticking like clock work. Animals are fed and milked daily, and all are thriving.

Rhett...

Annabelle...

Juliet..
.

And of course the leaves are changing colors and shedding their leaves...

This weekend was a fairly busy one off the homestead. Last Friday our church held a fall festival. It was a night full of Bible character costumes, games, and food for all. I dress like Ruth and was in charge of face painting. (in case you were wondering, Justin was dressed as Boaz ;) ) :D

Face painting my Daddy...
Face painting one of the kids...

I was able to spend Saturday with Justin's family. And I got to spend plenty of time holding his 4 month old niece. :D Then Sunday was spent in church, followed by a restful afternoon at home.

Monday evening my family visited my absolute favorite fall activity, the county fair! There were plenty of rides, cotton candy, lights, laughter, and cold wind blowing in the face. :D

My brother and I...

;D

Loved the changing lights on the Ferris wheel...

Thank you LORD for all of these blessing you have bestowed on me this last week. :)

Have a wonderfully blessed day everyone! Thanks for stopping by!

Guess What?

Guess who surprised this gal last Friday evening? Her very special someone of course. And guess what he completely and totally surprised her with. These little beauties of course...

Guess what made these blooms so special to this gal...

These were the first flowers she has EVER received from a guy (excluding the little brother).

I'd rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck. ~Emma Goldman

Flowers are those little colorful beacons of the sun from which we get sunshine when dark, somber skies blanket our thoughts. ~Dodinsky

To be overcome by the fragrance of flowers is a delectable form of defeat. ~Beverly Nichols

“What a lovely thing a rose is!... Our highest assurance of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers.”
~ Arthur Conan Doyle, The Naval Treaty

Wanna guess something else? She still cannot quite grasp the fact, even after six months, she could ever deserve to be courting/dating this amazing guy. A strong Christian, with an incredible servant's heart, my best friend and more, Justin. :)

Thank-you Father, for blessing me WAYYYY... more than I could even begin to deserve. Help me, to be the same sort of blessing, to the one who has been such to me.

Have a wonderfully blessed day everyone! Thanks for stopping by!

I Is Officially 22...

Yeap. As of yesterday around, 1:30 in the afternoon, I officially turned 22. Wow, I'm getting old... :P

And what a fantastic day it was. I'm not sure that I celebrated on just one day this year. In fact I think the party got started Saturday with a HUGE surprise from a very special someone.

Justin texted me Friday night asking me to ride to town with him Saturday morning. I'm naturally a nosy person, and asked him why. Well, he never really told me why. He just said he needed to get something adjusted. I left it alone and assumed he would tell me when he wanted.

Saturday morning comes, he picks me up, and instead of taking a left for town, we went straight. I asked where we were going, and he said he needed to pick something up at his house. We get to his house, and his 2 year old niece greets us and says "we got a present for you Angel!". Long story short, I opened this huge box, and laying in it was the most gorgeous compound bow. I got to spend all of Saturday adjusting my gift, and shooting her off. :D

For my actual birthday, I decided to hang around the house, with a slight celebration in the evening.

Mama grilled the most amazing steaks for dinner. Followed by my favorite dessert of cheesecake...

My brother gave me a huge surprise as well. Every year I ask him if he will give me some flowers, and he says no. This year, he surprised me with this...

Love that little brother of mine...

My sister fulfilled one request for me. A photo shoot with my special someone...

How about the LORD blessing me with this sight in the evening...

I am so thankful for another year. Twenty-one was a great year. Full of many adventures, and lessons from the LORD. I can't wait to see where twenty-two goes. GOD is so good, ALL the time! :D

Have a wonderfully blessed day everyone! Thanks for stopping by!

Why Muddy?

How does a country girl spend her Saturday with a very special someone? Well, first off she heads to town, to an outdoor store to check out camo clothing and bows (the kind you shoot...).

Then she enjoys lunch on the town at Chick Fil A. Yummy!

She and her special someone then head back to the woods where he gets her good and muddy! How does he get her muddy you ask? Well, he asks her to hop on board one of these.

And then it's down the back, dirt roads they go.

He then searches and searches until he finds the perfect hole. Then he eases into the hole and suddenly guns it, causing a shower of mud to rain down on the girl! :D

But you know what?

The country girl LOVES it.

You want to know why she loved getting all muddy?

Of course she loved the fast speed, wind blowing, perfect weather, and gorgeous scenery.

Best part though?

She got to spend the afternoon with not only her special someone, but her best friend. :)

Happy weekend everyone! Thanks for stopping by!

Cows, Beans, Wood Burning...

Good day friends and family! I pray that you are all having a wonderfully blessed day in our LORD! It's been a scorcher here in my part of North Carolina. Temps reached into the lower nineties, with a pretty high heat index. Wow, has the weather been wonderful... ;D

Well, it' been a fairly busy past few weeks. With daily farm chores, work at my neighbor's, church activities, life has been hopping. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Work on my neighbor's farm is moving right along. Squash, okra, and potatoes are the vegetables coming in right now. I pick those 2-3 days a week. I am still washing eggs, but no where near as many as I was before. My neighbor is slowly fading out of the egg business, so they are only getting about 50 dozen a week now. (it was almost 150 dozen in the winter...)

On the homestead front of things, there have been a few problems. All having to due with Anna-Belle our milk cow. We noticed that she was not producing much milk, and she was gradually eating less and less. Monday she stopped eating and drinking completely. So the vet was promptly called in to access the situation.

Anna-belle has been diagnosed with Ketosis. (here is an article if you want to learn more) There may be another issue causing problems, but the vet is going to wait and see how she responds to treatment for this. So far she is doing better. Eating for the most part, and running away from us come milking time. So prayerfully she is on the mend. :)

Our garden has been doing fairly well. I picked about 2 gallons of green beans this evening...

The cucumbers are coming in pretty regularly...

And our carrots are growing pretty well too...

The hydrangeas are still blooming beautifully...

And my sunflowers should pop out this week...

A special someone surprised me last week. Can you guess what it is from the pic?

Yes, Justin bought me a wood burning pen. :D I have been looking at one of these things for I don't know how long, and his sweet self bought me one. :)Oh and what fun this thing is! I have so many craft ideas via Pinterest that I cannot wait to get started on. The one I am most anxious to get started with is magnetic alphabet letters for my 3 year old class this coming year. All I need is to get some wood cut, and I will be busy for hours! :D

Our church had a combined teen and young couples/singles outing...

We went and played mini golf, and rode go karts by a local lake. So lots of fun times were had there...

A storm rolled through this evening. The clouds that preceded it were beautiful!

The clouds that followed it were pretty amazing too...

Thank-you LORD for all the beauty you have bestowed upon our lives. Even in the simple moments.

This looks to be a pretty busy week as well. But a very fun sort of week at that. Our church will be going on a camping/white water rafting trip, in the mountains of NC. I am so excited about this trip, and can truly hardly wait. :D I just have to get all of my normal weeks work completed in 3 days. It shouldn't be that bad though. I just have to work extra hard, and cram everything into a shorter period of time. :D

How has your week been? I pray it has been a wonderful one for you! :D

Have a wonderfully blessed day everyone! Thanks for stopping by!
