A Christian Woman's True Freedom

Ladies. Do you ever have those days where you HATE being a woman?

You know, the days where you just loathe the roles and responsibilities that are assigned to us. Being gracious, and submissive to our husbands.

I don't know about you, but this lady does.

And it seems that marriage has really shown me how I need to work ask for the LORD's help in this area.

More often than I like, I get upset at the fact I am called to be submissive to my husband. I like to lead, and often times greatly dislike authority. (BAD,BAD, BAD)

At times, I feel that by being submissive, I am losing my own free will, and abandoning my own identity as a person.

But that's not true.

Here is a quote I found today, by Elisabeth Elliot, that shares exactly why it is NOT true...

“The world looks for happiness through self-assertion. The Christian knows that joy is found in self-abandonment. 'If a man will let himself be lost for My sake,' Jesus said, 'he will find his true self.' A Christian woman's true freedom lies on the other side of a very small gate---humble obedience---but that gate leads out into a largeness of life undreamed of by the liberators of the world, to a place where the God-given differentiation between the sexes is not obfuscated but celebrated, where our inequalities are seen as essential to the image of God, for it is in male and female, in male as male and female as female, not as two identical and interchangeable halves, that the image is manifested.”
― Elisabeth Elliot

My rebellion at the thought of submission is rooted in the desire to assert myself higher on the "ladder of life", than I really am. I want to make myself "happy" by fulfilling a role I was not created for.

My joy is to be found in abandoning my selfish desires, for the cause of Christ.

And my identity is found in HIM, as a saved child of HIS...

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26-28

Each of the genders has a specific and GOD given role in this life. And each of these roles have differences in responsibilities that should be embraced with a thankful heart.

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Titus 2:1-8

As a woman, I am important to GOD.

What responsibilities I am given as a woman, are essential for the image of  Christ.

Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. 1 Corinthians 11:11-12

Now, prayerfully, when the urge to rebel at the thought of being a woman hits, I will be reminded of these verses, and this quote. :D

Have a wonderfully blessed day everyone! Thanks for stopping by!

  1. What a great post, Angel. You are so right! I am not a submissive woman by nature, and I find this to be one of the hardest parts of marriage. This quote is a great reminder of the importance of such a role, no matter what our society says

  2. What I love about the Christian view of marriage is the balance of it--we both have different roles within the marriage, yet, even as women, we don't lose our free will or autonomy--the husband's authority doesn't stretch so far that he can "make" us do something we know is wrong--I love that submission isn't unquestioning obedience, but simply following his lead and encouraging him to lead well.

  3. What an encouraging post, Angel! I too struggle with this and the root of it is that I often wish to be "higher up on the ladder." But God's will for us is so good! It is so refreshing to remember that His will leads to true fulfillment and the revealing of His image in us!

Thanks for writing! You've given me some courage to share my own struggles!

    God bless you!
